On Yi Deokmu's Theory of Self-Control for Poets

李德懋认为,文学是作家精神境界的形象体现,作家首先必须具有较高的人格修养,即人品重于诗品。但同时,人品与诗品未必相统一(其原因较多),为此,具有高尚品行节操的李德懋确定了三条升华人品之径。

Yi Deokmu argues that the spiritual realm of poets can be vividly mirrored by their poems. Therefore, he believes that it is imperative for poets to have a lofty moral integrity, which even goes before the poetic capability. He also holds that a poet's moral conduct does not necessarily comply with his/her poetic capability due to many reasons. Himself a lofty person,Yi Deokmu puts forward three approaches to achieve the sublimation of personality.
