“新女性”的背后——从女性主义的角度看《嘉莉妹妹》

Behind New Woman?——A Review on Sister Carrie in Light of Feminism

在美国文学史上,嘉莉妹妹一直是颇具争议的人物形象。作者对嘉莉的“堕落”采取了“暧昧”甚至是矛盾的立场,当代评论界也从最初的极端扼杀转变成后来的毁誉参半的态度,随后则有人认为嘉莉妹妹代表了美国社会中的“新女性”。文章从女性主义的角度出发,并结合西蒙·波伏娃的著作《第二性》,尝试重新解读嘉莉妹妹的“新女性”形象,指出该小说没有超越文化的社会根源,嘉莉始终是以“第二性”的身份存在于文本中的。同时,从女性主义的角度对德莱塞女性观的内在矛盾性做出了解释。

Abstract: In the history of American literature, Sister Carrie has always been a controversial character. Many critics regarded Carrie as a 揻allen woman, and there are also some critics regarded her as a 搉ew woman? The authors opinion is also contradicting. Through reading the book 揟he Second Sex?by Simone De Beauvoir, we will try to reinterpret the 搉ew woman?image of Sister Carrie. We will also make an explanation to the authors contradictory view of Sister Carrie through the feminist way.
