On the Expression for Resourcefulness in Yuan Operas

中国文学有表现智谋的传统,元杂剧作为俗文学和市井文学,于此有更突出的表现:有诸多剧目把智谋作为重要题材,加以铺张渲染,并因而造成曲折动人的情节,增强了杂剧的观赏性,迎合了市井平民的娱乐需求和欣赏趣味,亦促进了自身发展繁荣。元杂剧表现智谋,原因较复杂,择要而言,有文学传统、文体优势、现实背景等诸方面。

The Chinese literature has the tradition of expressing the resourcefulness. As the ancient Chinese popular literature and plebeian literature, Yuan operas were outstanding examples in this aspect. A great number of plays served the resourcefulness as the important theme, exaggerated and hyped to create the twisting and moving plots, enhanced the viewing effect of the plays, satisfied the civilians’ requirement of enjoyment and interest of appreciation and promoted their own development and prosperity. The cause of Yuan plays expressing the resourcefulness was more complicated, but in short embodied in such aspects as the literary tradition, style advantage and realistic background.
