'Europe' is an historical concept that first been discussed widely in the 15th century. 'Europe' and concepts concerning it are closely connected with the historical development in the continent, as the conceptual evolution of 'Europe' is an integral part of European history. It indicates not only a territory in geographic sense, but also the identity of Europeans. In order to understand better the current discussion on the border and eastern enlargement of the EU, it is necessary to understand the evolution of the idea of 'Europe'. In this paper, Europe is observed from three aspects: the territorial changes, the transformation of social and political institutions, and the cultural core of 'Europe'.
