The paper is a critical review of the ″New Formalist″ poetics of Timothy Steele. ″New Formalism″, of which Timothy Steele is one of the representatives in America, is a literary movement that came into being in the 1980s and is characterized by the return of metrics to the contemporary poetic scene. While acknowledging the legitimacy of his theories, the paper challenges his absolute denial of the free verse as a literary tradition.
