This paper intends to give an analysis of the carnival elements in Synges comedies with The Tinkers Wedding as a case study. By putting the two extremes of people(the holy priest and the humblest tinkers)in the Irish culture on the same plane, and through their carnival-like contact and exchange of roles, Synge shows the possibility of subversion of the relationships between the vulgar and the sublime, the humble and the great. From this possibility Synge sees signs of vitality lying in the transformations.
