Hardy portraits in his novels a group of new women with both values and moral standards different from those in the traditional society. The new women yearn for freedom and independence, are against traditional customs and full of rebellious spirit. However, they do not cast off some of the qualities of the traditional women, such as forbearance, obedience and self-sacrifice. By analyzing the new women from the aspects of society, history, politics, law, religion and moral customs, the paper illustrates that their contradictory double personalities truly reflect a series of turbulence and crisis on British and other western peoples mind, as well as the spiritual dilemma of the author himself.
