Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter has drawn worldwide attention ever since its publication in 1850.This is due to its abundant implications and subtle expressive techniques. The image of forest/wilderness has been endowed with binary meanings of good and evil. This paper intends to probe into the archetype of wilderness in terms of the social history and cultural tradition in the years of American colonial periods and analyze the influences exerted by religious thoughts.
