From the age of the ancient Greece to the nineteenth century, from Plato to Hegel, all the philosophers and literary men took for granted that philosophy and literature were poles apart, for philosophy pursued reason and the ultimate value of human beings while literature engaged in changeable feelings of human beings. Reason used to be taken as sublime. The 20 thcentury saw a challenge to such an idea. Revolt and negation began with the heavy attack of Non - rationalism on the traditional rationalism, and spread to the various schools of literature, like Modernism, Postmodernism and the like. In the 20 th century the chasm between literature and philosophy tended to vanish and a bridge was built up to connect them.
