Historical and Cultural Origines of the Cultural Mode of "Chinese Cultures as Basis and Western Cultures as Subsidiary

“中体西用”文化模式之所以影响深远，既有历史的渊源，也有传统文化的影响。从传统的“用夏变夷”这一处理民族关系的基本准则到明末清初的“禁教”、“教学”的文化排外政策再到鸦片战争时期的“师夷”主张，可见“中体西用”论的历史积淀很深；而从文化上看，有两个重要的因素：一是文化交流的一般规律使然；二是中国传统哲学特别是其价值观和思维方式的影响。

The cultural mode 'Chinese Culture as basis ,Western culture as subsidiary' is of great influence not only because of its historical origines but also because of the influence of traditional cultures. From the traditional basis principle of 'Transforming other nationalities with Chinese culture' to the anti-foreign cultural policies of 'Banning Catholicism'and 'Banning different schools of thought' in late Ming Dynasty and early Ching Dynasty, and then to the idea of 'Learning from foreign countries' dur-ing the Opium War,the profound historical sediment of that mode can easily be seen. Culturally, there are two factors that count. Namely, the influence of the general law of cultural interchanges and that of traditional Chinese philosophy, its view of value and way of thinking, in particular.
