改革开放的进一步发展迫切需要文化的内在驱动力和强大的社会整合功能。在全球化背景下提出“中国共产党始终代表先进文化前进的方向”无疑具有重大意义。先进文化在当代的使命是:坚持和发展马克思主义的指导思想地位;在全球化潮流中积极应对“文化帝国主义”的意识形态侵袭和“西化”“分化”图谋的挑战;促进和服务于改革、发展、稳定的大局;大力引导并不断满足劳动人民日益增长的精神文化需要。
