Through discrimination and comparison of the self-identity tendency in the autobiography of Rousseau and Sartre, this thesis parallels it in three aspects on the background of the western culture, which is the relation between self and self, the relation between self and the God, and the relation between self and the others. In this way, the thesis points out that in modern times, self-identity not only demands the sentiment, but also wisdom and courage.
