I make the assumption here that both architecture-and cultures are changing, (and, have never changed more dramatically than at the beginning of the 21st Century) and, that we as architects are at the apex of the curve of Change. However, because of certain levels of blindness, certain levels of being unprepared, and largely because of the overwhelming context of public policies which support globalization of economies, we are vulierable to continuing the disconnects between architecture and culture, Concurrnet with these changes, there is growing global concern for the future of the natural systems of planet Earth. I suggest there is, for a brief window of the future, an opportunity for architects and designers to influence a new paradigm for re-bonding the tie between culture and design through new regulations for creating and maintaining sustainable communities and sustainable regions of the planet. Working in such a new practice environment will, however, require considerable revision to the education, regulation, and expectation for the practice of architecture. This paper offers some baseline guidance and recommendations for becoming, and teaching the 'new architect'.
