The translation of Western science books into Chinese began with the JeSuits in the sixteenth century, but by 1800 their impact had waned. The First Opium War and the Taiping Rebellion stimuulated renewed interest in western military technologies and in the sciences that underpinned them, leading to systematic translations at government institutions in the late 1860s. Meanwhile, Western missionaries were making their own science translations, in the talief that science was an 'auxiliary to the spreading of the gospel'. Methods for translating and cuding new terms are unique and interesting. At that the the translations brought a relatively small direct influence, but in the next century they worked as catalysts for intellectual and political changes.
