The archetype of the Huaguo Mt. (Mountain of Flowers and Fruits) in A Journey to the West by Wu Cheng-en, one of the classics of Chinese novels, has long been arresting people's attention. Abundant literary and historical literature shows that Wu's traveling and the location of the Wu family are closely related in different ways to the actual Huaguo Mt. (of the Yuntai Mountain Range) in the City of Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, and to the creation of the novel itself. A thorough investigation into the plot and characters of the book, and a comparison of the scenery, customs and folklores with those in the locality around the actual Huaguo Mt. conclude that Huaguo Mt. in the City of Lianyungang is the archetype of the one in Wu's novel.
