An Avenger or A Fighter?--A New Explanation of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights

希刺克厉夫一向被认为是个恶魔式的复仇者,但笔者认为他只是一个普通的个人奋斗者。少年时,他执着地追求和凯瑟琳相互拥有的幸福;失败后,他转而不顾一切地追求金钱与地位。笔者认为他人生目标追求的转变,是其被社会同化的结果。希刺克厉夫终究还是不能脱离社会而存在,其人生悲剧也就是不可避免的。他的悲剧生动地表明了作为作家的艾米莉对社会和人生的怀疑与否定态度。

Heathcliff used to be considered as a fiendlike avenger, but in the writer's opinion, he is only a common fighter. He used to fight for Catherine's love but he failed, then he struggled desperately for asset and status. He had to change his lifetime goal in the progress of socialization. Heathclif could not escape his society's influence, thus his tragedy was inevitable. His tragedy shows Emily's suspicion in society and life.
