The Opening up of Zhenjiang Port to the Outside World and Modern Zhenjiang Education

镇江自古为长江下游的重要都市,历史上人文荟萃,教育比较发达。第二次鸦片战争后,在西方列强的胁迫下,镇江被逼开埠通商,商贸经济迅速发展,新兴的社会群体开始出现,镇江的教育事业也进入了一个新的发展阶段,成为镇江近代化过程的重要组成部分。

Zhenjiang has been an important city in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River since the ancient times. It has nourished and attracted many outstanding personalities as a result of its advanced education. During the Second Opium War, Zhenjiang Port was compelled to open to the outside world by the western powers. Thereafter, trade and commerce developed quickly, a new social group emerged and education in Zhenjiang then entered a new era of development, becoming an essential ingredient in Zhenjiang’s modernization.
