The behavior and fate of fine suspended sediments in estuaries of rivers flowing into sea have firm connections with development of underwater topographies and evolution of shoreline in the estuarine areas, which is crucial for sustainable social development in these areas. Studies on fine suspended sediments in estuaries have thus been attracting comprehensive attentions from coastal scientists and local governments globally. Based on published papers, mechanisms of flocculation are presented briefly for fine suspended sediments in estuaries of rivers flowing into sea. Controlling factors of flocculation are summarized, and impacts of biogeochemical processes on flocculation of fine suspended sediments are reviewed, taking the Yangtze River estuary as an example. Based on above summaries, some suggestions are made for studies in the future.
