On the description of the characters’brutalization in Germinal

本文聚焦于左拉名著《萌芽》中人物的兽性化问题,梳理出导致人物兽性化的重要因素:环境与遗传影响。在左拉那里,书中人物都成为这两种无法抗拒的厄运的牺牲品。笔者对其人物兽性化的剖析,旨在揭示作者对工人群众的态度,总结其创作手法的真正意图及艺术得失。

Focusing on the brutalization of the characters in Zola’s well-known work Germinal, this paper identifies two factors leading to the character’s brutalization: environmental impact and hereditary impact. In Germinal, all the characters become brutalized as the consequence of two inevitable factors. Analysing the brutalization of the characters created by Zola, the paper aims to reveal the writer’s attitude towards the working class, and to identify the real intention behind his writing style, and the literary strengths and weaknesses of that style.
