Present-day Ningbo 宁波 in Zhejiang 浙江 Province was called Mingzhou 明州 in the Tang and Song periods. It was a famous commercial port along the southeastern coastal area, and was ranked as one of the top four ports including Jiaozhou 交州, Guangzhou 广州, and Yangzhou 扬州 in the Tang Dynasty. In the first year of Changqing 长安 reign period of the Tang (AD 821), Mingzhou City was built in thecenter of present-day Ningbo City.
