This paper discusses the different types and functions of the reported speech in both written and spoken modes and contexts and, on the basis of the demonstration theory and the concept of 'constructed dialogue', it states that in spoken mode the reported speech, at least the so-called direct speech is by no means limited to the sense of 'reporting other's words', but 'reporting' many other aspects of speech act as well, hence can be called 'constructed'.
