The present paper, by combining archaeological data with literary records, studies a group of Western Zhou building foundations (Group A) discovered at Yuntang. The authors believe that the F1 complex and the F4 one may have been late Western Zhou buildings of ancestral temple nature, though the clarification of their owners' social rank calls for further research. In form the remains of the Yuntang ancestral temple is highly conformable to the Zhou ancestral temples previous scholars reconstructed on the basis of written documents. The Yuntang Fl complex is much similar to the Majiazhuang Ancestral Temple I in the Qin city of Yong and can be taken as the representative of the origin of the Qin ancestral temple. This is a piece of evidence in ancestral-temple and ritual-building architecture, which proves that the Zhou culture was the principal source of the Qin culture.
