Some Theoretical Problems of the Comparative Studies of Cultures

The international symposium "Macao and Other East_West Cultural Intersections: Comparison and Inquiry " has taken place in Macao from June 17 to 20, 2002. It was an interesting theoretical discussion on cultural comparison. The article refers to following problems. 1. Under the circumstances of economic globalization and China’s economic take off there should be some new visual fields for the East_West Cultural Comparison; 2. Although there are differences between the East _West Cultures, but there exist more generalities between them which are the basic premises for their comparison; 3. The cultural comparative method should be the composition of the historical method with the philosophical one; 4. Many theories of other disciplines are useful for cultural comparison, but history as narrative of any development process should be the most important one; 5. The problem of identity, including the historians’ identity, identity of state, nation or region, and identity of different development ways, is the important substance of cultural comparison.
