With the analysis from historical and cultural perspectives the paper discusses major reasons for the inevitable doomed fate of Gatsby - the protagonist in the American novel The Great Gatsby. The discussion reveals the discrepancy between ideals and reality and the subsequent, unavoidable destruction of the American dream. The paper holds that the presentation of Gatsby as unique to America signifies that Gatsby's personal dilemma and failure are the dilemma and failure of the American nation, thus satirizing, in a scathing manner, the illusory nature of the American dream and the impossibility of attaining it.
