Metaphor is not only a matter of language but also a way of thinking. It stimulates peoples imagination by means of association and analogy,and serves as an important tool of writing for poets. An analysis of The Gold in the Blue Sky by the great Russian poet Andrey Beley reveals that metaphor is the most important technique in Russian symbolistic poetry. An understanding of this point is the key to appreciation of the symbols in symbolistic poetry. Our analysis also shows that metaphors in Russian symbolistic poetry has some mystic features related to the poets' principles of religious aesthetics.
