The Comprehensible Output Hypothesis proposed by Swain(1985,1995) claims that language output produced by L2 learners will enhance the accuracy and fluency of their language use. This paper, after summarizing the three functions of comprehensible output predicted by this hypothesis, suggests that L2 learners need to have sufficient cognitive resources before they are able to pay attention to both the form and meaning of their language output. And this very cognitive precondition has not been acknowledged by most of the empirical studies focusing on the role of comprehensible output. This paper will discuss this issue by examining the role of attention in learning and analyzing one recent empirical study on pushed output produced by L2 learners.
