Students can score high in tests, but perform poorly in both oral and written communication; they consume much time in learning, but progress inefficiently. These problems are prominent in China's English teaching. After introducing the researches done on the Output Hypothesis, as well as focusing on the discussions of the functions of output (i.e. noticing/triggering, hypothesis-testing, metalinguistic function, and developing automaticity), the paper comes up with an effective solution to the problems, that is, to attach importance to the roles of output, and to strengthen the practice of language production in teaching activities. The paper then puts forward several implications of the researches for China's English teaching.
