It goes without saying that translation is based on the translator’s understanding of the original work. While translating literary works, especiallythe classics of famous writers, a translator’s choice of words reflects his experience of the objective world as well as his mastery of the relevant contextualinformation. Only when he has thoroughly understood the contextual information will a translator be able to guard against misinterpreting or distorting theauthor’s intended meaning. The present article adopts the process-product perspective to probe into some of the problems of interpretation and expressionfound in two translations and one annotated version of Babylon Revisited—a short story by F. S. Fitzgerald.
