Based on speech act scenario, this paper demonstrates the relationship between inference and conversational coherence through sample analysis of conversational coherence in Hemingway's short stories. This cognitive analysis attempts to show that Panther & Thornburg's speech act metonymy theory (1998) will highlight both the common ground and individual differences in achieving conversational coherence. The author also suggests that the common availability of cognitive resources of speech act scenario helps to assure sensible inference, i.e., the compatibility between the hearer's hypothesis of the speech act realization process through speaker's signaling changes of speech act scenario and that about the speaker's conversational goal and its plan of realization through other contextual clues.
