In many cases, language teaching and learning tend to devote to sentential level. My experience as a teacher of English has shown that organizing words in a sentence and sentences into a paragraph and paragraphs into a text poses a serious problem for most students, that is not only an unawareness of grammatical rules, but more often cohesion and coherence techniques. By illustrating the discourse theory, the present paper shall give a discourse analysis of a sample text from 21st Century College English, in an attempt to instill in English learners an awareness of how authentic texts are organized, and then how to apply the theory to their actual writings.
