Through a Penetrating examination of the cultural speech environment of Guangzhou in the 1980s-1990s and an in-depth investigation into the living conditions of urban residents, women in particular, in the social reshaping period as indicated in the novel, this article draws the reader's attention to one of the negative effects arising from the development of the market economy-that the drastic inflation of material desire makes a heavy load weighing on people's minds. The article also probes into women's perplexity and their coming of age and pinpoints the new qualities conducive to the injection of increased vitality into urban women's speech.
