语音史要深入发展，就必须进行断代的研究。对宋代语音史的研究是以宋代文士用韵的考察、归纳通语18韵系为标志的，随着对宋代的汉语言文献不断接近穷尽的考察与发掘，宋代的方言分区与各方言区的语言特征亦渐臻明朗。

The development of the history of phonology depends on its exhaustive study by period. The beginning of the history of Song Dynastic（宋）phonology is marked by investigating the rhymes used by the Song Dynastic（宋）literati and thereby generalising 18 rhyme systems of the then common language. With the closely thorough studying Song Dynastic（宋） Chinese language literature, the classification of the then dialect groups is becoming clear, so are linguistic features of each dialectal district.
