Context and Translation: Comments on the TEM-8(2000) English-to-Chinese Translation

语境即语言所处的环境。翻译中的理解和表达是在具体的语境中进行的。语义的确定、遣词造句、篇章结构以及语体形式均离不开语境。本文从这一观点出发，对英语专业八级英译汉试卷中所出现的问题进行了评析，以说明语境是正确翻译的基础，在八级备考及本科阶段英译汉教学中必须给予足够重视。

The term 'context' , which can be classified as broad context and narrow context, refers to all the dif-ferent situations involved in language communication. Context analysis plays a very important role in the entire process of translation. Taking this as its central argument, the article comments on the English-to-Chinese transla-tions produced in the year 2000 by candidates of the Eighth-band Test for English Majors (TEM-8). The purpose is to heighten the awareness of teachers and students that context should never be neglected-in translation teaching and in the preparation of TEM-8.
