The later part of the 20th century saw the conversion of some Chinese traditional opera players into singers. Their emergence as singers was significant of a shift in social cultural focus from Chinese traditional opera to singing art. Those singers owe their success to the substantial skill acquired from the practice of Chinese opera. What can be gleaned from the success of these converted performers is that modern vocal music should keep the soul of the traditional vocal arts it has inherited. Vocalists from both Chinese traditional opera and vocal performance backgrounds ought to make great efforts to learn from each others' performance abilities, thereby offsetting weaknesses and enhancing strengths. This will lead to the co prosperity of both types of artists.
