摘要
Australia held a referendum on building a republic or continuing a constitutional monarchy in 1999.The result of this referendum was a victory of the constitutional monarchy.The main topic of this article is to probe into its background.The division of the republicans and the political elites in despite of most ordinary people’s expectations,was the main causes.Besides, the Australian conservative thinkings and Australian’s being afraid of the unforseen future have also played important roles.The constitutional monarchy has been well and supported by a considerable body of people.
