A Semantic Study of the English Progressive

本文把句子中的成分分为两个部分:由句子类型、时态、体态、情态动词等构成的操作成分和由句子的词汇意义构成的命题内容.在此基础上,本文对英语动词的进行体形式和命题内容分别表示的体态意义分别进行了研究.句子的体态特征是由这两方面的体态意义共同决定的.

This paper divides the components of the sentence into two categories:operators composed of such elements as sentence type, tense, aspect, and modal verbs, and propositional content composed of the lexical meaning of the sentence. On this basis, this paper makes a study of the aspectual meaning indicated respectively by the progressive form of the verb and by the propositional content. The aspectual properties of the sentence are decided by these two types of aspectual meaning.
