A CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY OF BRONZE GUI FOOD CONTAINERS OF THE WESTERN ZHOU PERIOD

西周铜器的年代研究直接关涉到金文材料的利用，因而是西周铜器研究中最重要的工作之一。过去许多学者都曾致力于这方面的工作，并作出了重要贡献。但长期以来，对西周铜器年代的认识，各家并未取得一致的看法，以致学者在利用这些材料时无所适从。

It is a hard issue to make chronological study of bronze gui food containers of the Western Zhou period for the great variation of their form.In the present paper,the author tries to get this problem into shape by discussing it in three parts.The first part explains the author's research method and summarizes former scholars'achievements on the subject.The second part is a chronological analysis of the bronze gui from the Western Zhou by the following precedure.First,the examples are divided into eight types according mainly to the variation of the belly and ring foot,and further into subtypes.Based on the above division, the horizontal relationship between different vessels is built up.Then,based on the dating of individual vessels,and exploration is made on the temporal scopes in which different forms of gui were popular.In the third part,the author discusses the prevailing types of bronze gui and the evolutionary lines of various forms in the early,middle and late Western Zhou. As the present paper offers a detailed classification of most of the presently-known Western Zhou gui varying in shape,those examples beyond the coverage of the paper can also be assigned to their corresponding types and dates according to their forms.
