From September 1998 to July 1999, archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of Yunnan, Kunming Museum and Guandu Muesum carried out excavations of a graveyard with an area of forty thousand sq m at Yangfutou, Xiaobanqiao township, Kunming. The excavation opened up a 10,700 sq m, bringing to light 495 tombs of the Dian culture and 29 tombs of the Eastern Han. The tombs of the first category, all of a rectangular earthen shaft, belong chronologically to the Western Han and early Eastern Han, and break into three groups according to their size. The burial mode is dominated by limb dissociation and superimposition. Of the four thousand pieces of funerary objects, bronze ones rank first, followed by pottery, lacquered wooden, iron, jade and stone objects. Tomb (M113) yielded a variety of bronze weapons and tools, all well equipped with a lacquered wooden handle. Mention should be made of a peculiar lacquer phallus-like object. All the lacquer objects show a nice design in fresh color, casting much light on the Dian culture.
