Enshi district was first recognized as se-leniferous area in china, where selenosis out-break among humans and animals once oc-curred.In order to determine the effects of en-vironmental selenium on the food chain,an in-vestigation has been carried out in selenium-rich area and non-seleniferous area with no se-lenosis history.Analysis of over 50 sampleshave demostrated that the selenium content infoods in seleniferous area was remarkabletyhigher than that in non-seleniferous area(p<0.01),but with wide variance, showing a sig-nificant correlation between the environmentalselenium and foods. The stony coal had high-est selenium content in environment, amongfoods selenium level in maize,soy-bean andgreen vegetables stood high. This area hastherefore been classified as se-excessive eco-logical landscape.Se was brought to environ-ment mainly through excavation and utiliza-tion,weathering and rain-drenching of selenif-erous stony coal, and was thus accumulationand enriched in plant foods, and was thentransferred the food chain for human con-sumption.Keshan Diseases and Kaschin-Beokdisease have been identified in 15 provincesand districts, development of Se-rich foods inseleniferous area and supply of these foodproducts to Se-poor areas might be helpful inthe control of these diseases.
