Victors in the Struggle for Survival

Since the 50's of the last century, there have emerged in succession many excellent Canadian women writers, devoting themselves to writing about the specific kind of struggle for survival in the Canadian environment. Most of these writers set women as the center of their novels, depicting their hard pioneering life, their great courage, and their efforts to pursue individual values while making contributions to the construction of a home in the new country. This essay starts by briefly introducing a general picture of the development of Canadian literature based on certain Canadian literary critics' opinions (e.g. comments by Professor David Staines). Then the essay enters an analysis of three major Canadian women novelists, such as Sheila Watson, Margaret Laurence and Margaret Atwood, and their major works. The essay also offers some comparisons between the discussed Canadian works with two or three familiar English and American novels in order that the unique characteristics of the Canadian novels and their achievements can be better presented.
