Manchu Place Names and Manchu Culture

作为人类文明的衍生物，语言既是文化的组成部分，也是文化的载体之一。从这个意义上说，以语言为“构筑材料”的地名是反映人类文明的“窗口”。满语地名作为珍贵的满族历史文化遗产，其价值不仅在于满语濒临消逝的形势下，保存了丰富的满族历史语言资料，还因为它积淀、蕴藏的独特民族文化内涵而成为今天深入研究满族社会历史文化的“活化石”。通过满族经济形态、民居建筑、社会结构、宗教信仰等方面地名的分析研究，有助于深化对满族文化的认识。

As a derivative of human civilization, language is b oth a component and a carrier of culture. Accordingly, place names, with languag e as the “ building material”, is a “window” of human civilization. As preci ous historical and cultural heritage of the Manchu nationality, the value of Man chu place names lies not only in its preservation of rich historical and linguis tic materials of the Manchu nationality under the circumstances of endangered ex tinction of the Manchu, but also in the unique ethnic and cultural connotations deposited and contained in the place names which have become “living fossils” for further studies of the history and culture of Manchu society. The analysis a nd research of the place names that reflect aspects of the economic formations, residential architecture, social structure, religious beliefs, etc. will contrib ute to the understanding of the Manchu culture.
