The publication of a bronze printing board for paper money in East Asian Numismatics in Japan in the 1930 s shocked Chinese numismatists. However, its nature has remained unraveled until today. In the late Northern Song dynasty, jiaozi,a paper money in northwest China, was widely used, hurting badly the so- called yanchao or money connected with salt. What's worse, the bad situation of the salt factory in Xiezhou made it impossible to cash yanchao with salt.In the forth year of the Chongning reign period when the salt factory was repaired, the government issued new yanchao and qianyin, the former for payment to the revenue and the latter to replace jiaozi. The very board in cpiestion was made to print qianyin, which unfortunately functioned for only half a year due to the chaos in the monetary market. However, the board is the earliest tangible evidence to paper money in the would.
