McNeill’s The Rise of the West (Chicago,1963,1991)is a milestone work in universal historiography.It in herits the traditions of Toynbee and Spengler,and it also ushers in a new era of total or universal historiography,e.g.I.Wallersteon,P.Anderson and E.Wolf’s works.Chinese historians should know more information about the achievements of universal historiography in the later 20 th century of the world.
