统一战线是中国共产党夺取社会主义革命和建设事业胜利的重要法宝。毛泽东是中国统一战线理论的创造者和实践者。邓小平继承和发展了毛泽东的统战思想，创造性地提出了适应时代变革的、新的统战思想，使马克思主义统战理论得到丰富和发展。以江泽民为核心的党的第三代领导集体，坚持邓小平新时期统一战线理论，又在实践中提出许多新观点，作出许多新决策，回答了统一战线工作中的新问题，把邓小平新时期统战理论向前推进了一步。经过党中央三代领导集体的探索与实践，新时期的中国统一战线，继承了马克思主义的基本原理，又丰富和发展了马克思主义统战学说，形成了具有中国特色的马克思主义统战理论。新时期中国统一战线理论是邓小平理论的重要组成部分。进入新的世纪，既有发展的机遇，也面临着新的挑战，对统战工作中热点、难点、重点问题的认识和解决，必将为进一步丰富和发展新时期的中国统一战线理论注入新的生机和活力。
