元朝版图辽阔 ,其军事戍防体系由中央宿卫制和地方镇戍制组成。元朝戍防对象 ,对外有西北诸王、沿海日本海盗、安南、占城、缅国等反抗势力 ;对内主要是镇遏江南南宋残余势力及边疆地区各部族。作者认为 ,稳定统治要通过有效的行政管理来实现。元朝面对激烈的民族矛盾、社会矛盾 ,虽曾尝试以实行汉法来解决问题 (即所谓文治 ) ,但统治者过于迷信武力 ,一味镇压 。

The Yuan Dynasty with a vast territory, its defense system is composed of Central defense and local places guarded by armymen. The resisting forces such as Khans in northwest area, Japanese sea rovers, Annam, Zhancheng and Birma formed the external objects of defense of the Yuan Dynasty. But for inner objects are press down and hold back the remnants of the force of South Song palace in south and tribes in borderland. The author considers that the Yuan Dynasty made an attempt to solve the problems at one time through carring out the civil code of inland due to intensification of nationality conflict, social contradictions. But the sightless repress of rulers caused the rule of Yuan Dynasty to breakdown on account of their believing armed might.
