后现代主义小说中的人物与人物塑造

Character and Characterization in Postmodernist Fiction

本文讨论了三种不同的人物观 :现实主义作家说人物是人 ,现代主义作家说人物是人格 ,而后现代主义作家说人物是影子。现代主义小说中的人物塑造重点已不在其外部描写 ,也不在道德或心理特征的刻画 ,而在其社会心理甚至生理本体的不确定。character原本就有“标记”的意思 ,如今在后现代主义作家的笔下显然是个影子 ,读者无法辨认之下只好参与人物塑造了。

To this question different writers have different answers The realists say a character is a person or people; the modernists, personality; the postmodernists, a figure, each reflecting his/her own views on character Time changes, so does the concept of character In postmodernist fiction, the focus of characterization is not on the physical description of a person, nor on the moral or psychological traits, but on the uncertainty of the social, psychological and even physiological identity So character which etymologically means “mark' is, under the pen of a postmodernist, a figure or shadow, so hard to discern that the reader cannot help but participate in the process of characterization
