Pinghua in Southern Guangxi Belongs to Cantonese

广西平话(本文主要指桂南平话)的系同一直有争议。有的学者主张“平话”单立一区,与粤语并列为不同的两大方言。本文作者曾参与对粤北、粤西的粤语进行了系统的调查研究,发现支持平话单立的几个语言特点不但普遍存在于粤北、粤西的粤语中,而且珠江三角洲的粤语同样有成片相应的语言事实。本文旨在运用语言事实证明平话当是粤语的一个地域分支,把平话单立为一个方言区,其理由并不非常充分。

To which dialectal group does Pinghua in Guangxi belong? This remains a question to be answered. This paper mainly discusses Pinghua in the south of Guangxi. Since early 1980s, some linguists have advocated the independence of Pinghua by listing some characteristics and argued that Pinghua and Cantonese are two different dialectal groups.Following A Survey of Dialects in the Pearl River Delta, we have examined Cantonese in the north and west of Guangdong since the early 1990s. With these endeavors, we have found that the characteristics which support the independence of Pinghua exist widely in Cantonese, not only in the north and west of Guangdong but also in the Pearl River Delta. Sufficient materials have proven that Pinghua is only a branch of Cntonese rather than an independent dialectal group.
