Impact on Prognosis following Healing-up of Leakage of Esophago-gastric Anastomosis after Cancer Resection

From June 1979 to December 1984,30 anastomotic leakage took place in postoperative patients following esophageal and gastric cardiac cancer resection and 1 6 of them were cured. The others died. All the 16 survived patients developed postoperative thoracic cavity infection and fever. The 5-year survival rate of these 16 cases was 50% which was longer than that of patients with same stage of disease during the same peroid of time but uneventful pustopera-tively. It appears that infection and fever are advantageous in terms of long-range survival.
