Twelve clay samples consisting largely of illite have been selected for the mineralogical study by means of IR, X-ray, DTA, chemistry, SEM, ect. The analytic results show that the intensity and shape of IR absorption bands near 3600,830, 750cm-1 are changed with sample, which is related to illite ordered degree,when above absorption bands are changed from sharp into broad, from strong to weak, the illite polymorph is transformed from 2M-1Md mixed to 1Md, the ordered degree decreasing and expansion layer increasing from <10 % to >63%, with the amount of H2O+ increasing and K+ values decreasing. Thus, it is possible to identify the structure ordering and mineral expansibility in the Al-Dioctahedral mica group minerals by means of infrared spectrum, which are useful in the indication of the degree of diagensis, and identity of detrital or diagenetic illite.
