In his scientific career of some fifty years, Prof. Yin Zanxun had a wide scope of researches on the geologic studies. He attended to the investigations of paleontology, stratigraphy, volcanology, sciencesleology, regional geology, geogectonics, plate tectonics and history of natural sciences etc. He worked more on fossil mollusca and graptolites but he also did works on fossil fish struvites and Cruziana. In 1976, he introduced the paleontological clock to China with J. D. Lo.In his studies on stratigraphy, he excerted himself more or less into nearly every system of the Phanerobiotic stratigraphy except Tertiary system but he made more inquiries on the Silurian of China. He edited or directed others to edit some implementary books for the stratigraphy of China. He paid more efforts for reViewing and synthesizing the works on the stratigraphy of China and correct the incorrect and chaotic usages of the terms of the geologic periods and epochs with respect to their stratigraphic names in Chinese literatures. By his labor of years and especially dozens of nights, he elaborated his report 'Reflections on the twenty years' experiences in the stratigraphical studies in China' during the 2nd All China Stratigraphic Conference in 1979. In this report the stratigraphical works in China within the latest twenty years were summarized and commented. He collected the stratigraphical names of China and amended usages of these names himself. He collected likewise the names of crustal movements in China and adjusted their definitions in cooperation with Prof. Dr. T. K. Huang and others. In the paper 'On folding phases', he confirmed. H. Stifle's efforts in the studies on geotectonics but criticized his viewpoints of contemporaneity and short time of folding phases. Meantime he made suggestions on the nomenclature and application of the folding phases in China. He introduced the studies on palaeogeology and especially important international researches on plate tectonics into China. In the works on the Quaternary geology of China, he made excavations for the fossil mammals near Harbin in northeastern China and observations in a famous Yunshui Cave in the southwest of Beijing. He had emphasized the importance of the investigations on Kharst and speleology. He did repeated observations on the Datong volcanoes in northern Shanxi. He corrected the incorrect opinion, prophesied wrongly by a Russian petrologist, of the future explosion of these extinct volcanoes and thus settled down the rumour and people's fear in the Datong region. He did this work in his illness during the early winter when he was 73 years old, and expressed a good character of a people's scientist. For several times he gave up his working subject of study and transferred it to the junior scientists for training and instructing them and developing scientific tasks of China. He had infinite mourning and indignation to the national loss and misery in death of three paleontologists who were killed by bandits during their field work in 1944.Before liberation his frustrated career and poor life, as well as those of the people in sharp contrast with the corrupt government and world of wine and women of the officials compelled him to be disappointed in the government. In his thoughts he opposed the Kuomintang government. He hated the rotten high-placed officials and refused to accept any donation from them. He despised Dr. W. H. Weng but worshipped Prof. F. Z. Zhang. He did his utmost to escape the partaking into Kuomintang when he was sent to the Central Training Group in Chongqing, 1942.Hence he stood firmly for the opinion to stay in Naming and wait for liberation when the Kuomintang government forced the Netional Geological Survey to remove to Taiwan.Naturally he expressed his sincere wish to become a communist as early as in 1949. 'Through trials, hardships and the earnest seeking for exactly thirty years',he became a communist in 1979. 'At last I have found my politic end as I wished. This is also my highest ideal in my life', he said in 1983. After he became a communist he wor
